2008 Professional Development Workshop
March 27, 2008
SC Archives & History Center
8301 Parklane Road
Columbia, SC 29203
Registration | Agenda | Directions

SCASFAA is pleased to announce that the 2008 Professional Workshop will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the SC Archives & History Center in Columbia, SC.  Registration is FREE for SCASFAA members.  All non-members need to pay 07-08 member dues ($20).  Please print and submit the registration form by March 21, 2008. Registration will begin at 8:45 am; the first session will begin at 9:00 am and the workshop will conclude at 4:00 pm.  A buffet lunch will be provided.
This workshop will help participants:

  1. Discover the strengths and weaknesses of different communication styles.
  2. Find a way to love what you do everyday. When you work for the love of it, you will serve as an inspiration to yourself and to those around you.
  3. Explore the area of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and the importance of EI in a work environment. Emotional intelligence helps us be less reactive, more inclusive, more creative, more resilient, and enables us to enroll others in a shared vision.
  4. Explore specific techniques that can be used in your organization to develop more open communication, build stronger teams, and create a positive, collaborative work environment.

Our presenters are TG’s Pat Woods and Darron Grussendorf.

Patricia Woods is the Assistant Team Manager in Corporate Learning and Development. She has over 20 years of experience in the student loan industry. She manages two Leadership Development Programs designed to help TG team members pursue their career interests and increase their value to the organization.

Darron Grussendorf is the Senior Trainer in Corporate Learning and Development. He has more than 12 years experience in the student financial aid industry, having worked as both a school financial aid director and in TG’s policy and regulatory affairs. He joined TG’s training team in 2001 and is a graduate of TG’s Leadership Development Program.

We look forward to seeing you on March 27th.  Please call me at 803-777-4800 or email at bdavis@gwm.sc.edu if you have questions, have dietary restrictions, or need any special arrangements.

LearnStudentAid.org

SCASFAA is excited to continue its partnership with the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) and its Web-based training program, LearnStudentAid.org.

One of NASFAA’s primary missions is to provide training to financial aid administrators at all experience levels. Since September 2004, LearnStudentAid.org has been offering on-line courses for those who are new to the profession. And this year, they have added three additional courses for the more “seasoned” financial aid professionals.

We recognize that many of you already benefit from state, regional, and other training. However, NASFAA’s LearnStudentAid.org fills the gap when there is no money in the budget to send someone away to training, and when someone new begins and there is no planned training in the state at that time.

This benefit of state association membership will provide you with the opportunity to train online at prices that are 10% lower than the price of the same course package that is available to those who do not participate through a state partnership. If your institution is a NASFAA member, individuals will pay $216 for the four-course "Financial Aid Fundamentals" package (currently priced at $240). If the institution is not currently a NASFAA member, individuals will pay $306 (currently priced at $340) for the four-course package. For the three-course “Financial Aid Advanced” package, individuals will pay $67.50 per course (currently priced at $75 per course). These prices are good through June 30, 2008.

Benefits to You
  • Courses begin the first of each month, so there is very little wait time for training.
  • There is no required time out of the office, any travel time or associated travel cost.
  • Training is reasonably priced, PLUS learners receive a discount on the full four-course and individual three course packages because they are members of your state association.
  • Trainees get access to the NASFAA Web site and the NASFAA Encyclopedia for the duration of their training, whether or not their institution is a member of NASFAA.
  • Each participant is assigned an individual account and gets individual credit for completing the courses in the form of certificates of completion from NASFAA.
How to Participate
  • Go to www.LearnStudentAid.org review the courses that are available.
    • Series I: Four-course “Financial Aid Fundamentals” package
      • FA 101: Overview of the Student Financial Aid Programs
      • FA 102: Application Processing
      • FA 103: Cost of Attendance
      • FA 104: Need Analysis
Please note that the reduced price is only available for the full four-course package.
    • Series II: Three-course “Financial Aid Advanced” package
      • FA 201: FERPA
      • FA 202: Packaging
      • FA 203: Professional Judgement
Please note that the reduced price is only available on the individual courses for the three course package.
  • Go to the LearnStudentAid Web page at www.LearnStudentAid.org. Review “How to Enroll,” which includes a link to the LearnStudentAid.org registration form.
  • Complete the LearnStudentAid.org registration form. Indicate whether your institution is a NASFAA member or not, enter the discount (coupon) code of SC0506, and sign up for the four-course or the three individual course packages.
  • Once you have registered, NASFAA will confirm your registration and send you by e-mail all the information you need to get started on the first day of online classes.

Good luck! If you have any questions about the state benefit, you can contact Bridget Blackwell, SCASFAA 07-08 Vice President. If you have questions about registration or other matters relating directly to LearnStudentAid, contact LearnStudentAid@nasfaa.org.
